Natural Disturbance-Based Forest Management: Moving Beyond Retention and Continuous-Cover Forestry

چکیده
Global forest area is declining rapidly, along with degradation of the ecological condition remaining forests. Hence it necessary to adopt management approaches that can achieve a balance between (1) human designs based on homogenization structure efficiently deliver economic values and (2) naturally emerging self-organized ecosystem dynamics foster heterogeneity, biodiversity, resilience adaptive capacity. Natural disturbance-based suggested provide such an approach. It grounded premise disturbance key process maintaining diversity structures, species functions, evolutionary potential, which functionally link sustainability services supporting well-being. We review development, foundations applications natural management. With emphasis boreal forests, we compare this approach two mainstream sustainable management, retention continuous-cover forestry. Compared these approaches, provides more comprehensive framework, compatible current understanding multiple-scale processes underlie potential ecosystems. conclude ecosystem-based framework for managing forests needs commodity production immaterial values, while health in rapidly changing global environment.

Market Adaptive Control Function Optimization in Continuous Cover Forest Management
Economically optimal management of a continuous cover forest is considered here. Initially, there is a large number of trees of different sizes and the forest may contain several species. We want to optimize the harvest decisions over time, using continuous cover forestry, which is denoted by CCF. We maximize our objective function, the expected present value, with consideration of stochastic p...
متن کاملStochastic Dynamic Programming with Markov Chains for Optimal Sustainable Control of the Forest Sector with Continuous Cover Forestry
We present a stochastic dynamic programming approach with Markov chains for optimal control of the forest sector. The forest is managed via continuous cover forestry and the complete system is sustainable. Forest industry production, logistic solutions and harvest levels are optimized based on the sequentially revealed states of the markets. Adaptive full system optimization is necessary for co...

متن کاملNatural Disturbance effects on forest carbon dynamics, and the role of forest management in the process
Natural disturbance processes are affected by both forest management and climate change. The resulting shifts in natural disturbance processes can have profound impact on the secondary successional pathways of British Columbia forest types (Ran & Swift 2013). Building an understanding of how these systems work and their potential changes over time and space is important since many forest manage...
متن کاملStand-landscape integration in natural disturbance-based management of the southern boreal forest
Forest ecosystem management, based partly on a greater understanding of natural disturbance regimes, has many variations but is generally considered the most promising approach to accommodating biodiversity concerns in managed forested regions. Using the Lake Duparquet Forest in the southeastern Canadian boreal forest as an example, we demonstrate an approach that attempts to integrate forest a...
